Frequently Asked Questions

The questions the Authority is asked most often. If your question is not here, ask us through the feedback form and we will answer it — and add it here.

Registration

Who counts as a tea smallholder?
{"en":"A person lawfully in possession of land under tea not exceeding ten acres — about 4.05 hectares. The extent is measured across all the tea land held by the same person, not per block, so several small blocks are added together."}
How do I register my holding with the Authority?
{"en":"Ask the Tea Inspector for your range for a registration form, or collect one from your Regional Office. The Inspector verifies the extent and the particulars of the holding, and the Regional Office issues your registration number. There is no fee."}
I have lost my registration number. How do I recover it?
{"en":"Your Regional Office holds the register. Take your National Identity Card and, if you have it, any earlier correspondence or subsidy paperwork, and the office will confirm the number to you."}

Subsidies

How much is the replanting subsidy and when is it paid?
{"en":"The rate is set by the Authority and revised from time to time; the current rate is published with the application form in the Downloads section. It is paid in instalments — on uprooting, on planting and on the establishment of the young tea — each released after a field inspection."}
Can I replant only part of my holding?
{"en":"Yes. The block being replanted must meet the minimum extent stated in the guidelines, but it does not have to be the whole holding. Most smallholders replant in stages so that the holding continues to yield."}
My application has been with the office for months. What can I do?
{"en":"Contact the Regional Manager of your district office, quoting your registration number and the date you applied. If the matter is still not resolved, use the feedback form on this site: every submission is given a reference number, routed to a responsible officer and tracked until it is answered."}

Fertilizer

How is my fertilizer entitlement calculated?
{"en":"From the registered extent of your holding, at the rate published in the issue notice for the season. If the extent on the register is wrong, ask your Tea Inspector to have it corrected before the next issue."}
Where do I collect my allocation?
{"en":"From the issuing point named on your district’s issue notice — usually your society, or the Regional Office. Take your National Identity Card and your registration number."}

Societies

What is a Tea Smallholder Development Society?
{"en":"A village-level body of registered smallholders within one Tea Inspector range. Societies organise input purchase, receive allocations on behalf of members, run welfare and savings programmes, and are the route through which many Authority programmes reach the field."}
How do we form a new society?
{"en":"Convene a formation meeting with your Tea Inspector present, adopt the model constitution and elect office bearers, then submit the application with the minutes and the member list to your Regional Office."}

Training

Who can attend a programme at Hantana?
{"en":"Registered smallholders, society office bearers and staff nominated by their division. Individual programmes may set further criteria, which are stated with the programme in the calendar."}
Is accommodation provided?
{"en":"Residential programmes are marked as such in the calendar and include accommodation at the Centre. Non-residential programmes do not."}

This website

The site is not in my language. How do I change it?
{"en":"Use the language switcher in the header. The site is published in English, Sinhala and Tamil, and switching keeps you on the page you were reading rather than returning you to the home page. Your choice is remembered."}
How do I get alerts when something is published?
{"en":"Subscribe from the Announcements section and choose the categories you care about — tenders, vacancies, fertilizer and subsidy notices, training programmes or general news. You will be sent a confirmation link, and every message carries a one-click unsubscribe."}
How do I make a Right to Information request?
{"en":"Submit the RTI request form to the Information Officer at Head Office. You will receive an acknowledgement with a reference number, and a response within the statutory period."}

Feedback & Petitions
